Hoover's ability to maintain strict tolerances during mass production of balls is synonymous with reliable performance. This is one of the reasons why Hoover balls are found in the majority of America's automotive, aerospace, marine, industrial, construction, and scientific equipment. Hoover manufactures balls ranging from 0.017 inches (0.43 mm) in diameter for use in ballpoint pens to 4.5 inches (114 mm) in diameter for heavy-duty military and industrial applications. Tolerances for bearing-quality balls are held to within 25-millionths of an inch (0.00064 mm), while absolute roundness for precision balls is maintained within 3-millionths of an inch (0.00008 mm). Surface finish is less than one RMS. The production of balls is a complex, time-consuming, and highly precise process, traditionally dependent on the skill of the operator. Hoover supplies a complete range of materials and has the capability to manufacture metal and ceramic balls to Grade 3 specifications. Plastic balls can be produced to Grade 0 specification, which uses a different grading scale than metals and ceramics.
