New Departure — From Doorbells to Innovations in Bearings and Brakes

New Departure Bell Company was founded in 1888 by brothers Albert and Edward Rockwell in Bristol, Connecticut, as a manufacturer of doorbells. They began operations in one section of a clock factory, making doorbells. Soon after, they diversified their product range, manufacturing various other items.

In 1898, New Departure introduced the bicycle coaster brake, and by 1903, they had also begun making brakes for belt- and chain-driven motorcycles. The company produced large quantities of front and rear bicycle hubs.

Today, the New Departure and Hyatt brands are owned and marketed by General Bearing Company of New York.
