In 1936, an inventor from New England created a tiny ball bearing to replace a gemstone in a family heirloom. Winslow Pears not only repaired his father's watch but also founded an entire industry. His invention made possible devices that travel millions of miles in space and gently land on distant planets; dental tips that operate painlessly at half a million revolutions per minute; and airplanes that can navigate accurately in the dark and in bad weather. Millions of devices worldwide use ball bearings manufactured in large quantities every year. Three years after his invention, Winslow Pears led the founding of Miniature Precision Bearings, Inc. In 1941, the team established its headquarters in Keene, New Hampshire, and the industry was born. The company’s growth was fueled by the demands for precision instruments for aircraft during World War II. Among the most notable was the Norden bombing sight, considered one of the greatest technological achievements of that era and significantly enhancing the effectiveness of the U.S. Air Force. After the war, the company became a pioneer in mass production of precision ball bearings while maintaining high quality standards. Today, Timken Super Precision is a subsidiary of the Timken Company. This partnership further strengthens our ability to meet application requirements with high-quality products produced in the most efficient way. |
