Chevrolet was founded on November 3, 1911, by William Durant—the founder of General Motors—along with the famous race car driver and engineer Louis Chevrolet, and investors William Little and Edwin Campbell. The company was named after Louis Chevrolet, who was then a star of the Buick racing team and a favorite driver of David Buick. Interestingly, Louis Chevrolet did not remain long with the company that bore his name: he soon left his position as chief engineer and sold all his shares. Around this time, Durant, who had previously been ousted from the leadership of General Motors, began buying up GM shares and, in 1918, exchanged his Chevrolet stock for General Motors stock, regaining control of the company and becoming its chairman once again. |
